BLUE COAST HOLISTIC PSYCHOTHERAPY IN SARNIA, ON
How did we become so disconnected?
You used to be on the same team. Now you’re having the same argument in different clothes, or you’re not having it at all because it’s easier to say nothing. The house runs, the kids get where they need to be, but most evenings you end up on opposite ends of the couch. You still love each other. You’re just further apart than either of you meant to get.
In couples therapy, we help you find your way back to one another.
Healing happens together.

Couples Therapy in Sarnia
What Is Couples Therapy?
Couples therapy is work you do together with a couples therapist to understand the patterns between you and change the ones that keep hurting. That might be communication that turns into conflict, trust that’s been shaken, intimacy that’s gone quiet, or the strain of a hard stretch you’re both carrying differently.
At Blue Coast Holistic Psychotherapy, our approach is holistic, which simply means we look at the whole picture. Your histories, your attachment styles, the stress you’re each under, and the health of your own nervous systems all shape how you meet each other. Most arguments aren’t really about the dishes, and understanding what’s underneath them is where change begins.
Couples come to us saying things like:
“It shouldn’t be this hard to talk to the person I love most.”
“We’re growing apart instead of growing together.”
“I miss feeling like we’re on the same team.”
“We keep having the same fight and never getting anywhere.”
“I don’t know if we can come back from this.”

Conflict & Recurring Arguments
Read More
The same fight, over and over, with a different starting point each time. We’ll look at the pattern underneath it, so you can stop having the argument and start having the conversation.

Emotional & Physical Intimacy

Life Transitions & Stressors

A new job, a move, a loss, an illness, or a teen or adult child leaving home. Big changes ask something of a relationship, and we’ll help you meet them together rather than separately.

Different instincts, different upbringings, and very little sleep. We’ll help you get onto the same page as partners, whether you’re raising children together or apart.

How We Help Couples In Therapy
We draw on effective, evidence-based approaches to support you and your partner in strengthening communication, rebuilding trust, and nurturing a deeper connection.
Gottman Method Couples Therapy
The Gottman Method is built on decades of research into what makes relationships work. It gives us a clear picture of your patterns, then practical tools for conflict, friendship, and repair that you can use at home.
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)
EFT looks at the emotional needs underneath your arguments. Most conflict is a bid for connection that didn’t land, and EFT helps you both recognize those moments and respond differently.
Attachment-Based Therapy
How safe it felt to depend on people early in life shapes how you handle closeness, conflict, and reassurance now. Understanding your attachment patterns explains a great deal about how you meet each other.
Internal Family Systems (IFS)
Each of you brings parts that protect, parts that withdraw, and parts that push. IFS helps you see what those parts are trying to protect, so you stop fighting each other’s defences.
Cognitive-Based Therapies
Using CBT and CPT, we do practical work on the thoughts and assumptions running underneath your reactions, so you each know what to do next.
Our Approach
How Our Couples Therapy Works

Step 1: We Meet You Both Together
Your first session runs 60 to 90 minutes, so we have time to understand the relationship, your history together, and what brought you here.

Step 2: We Meet Each of You Individually
Then you have one session each, individually. This gives us a fuller picture of what each of you is carrying, and gives you space to say things you may not have said yet.

Step 3: We Work Together From Here
The rest of your sessions are the two of you and your couples therapist, working on the patterns underneath the conflict and building something steadier.
ALIGN ADHD Program In Sarnia

Frequently Asked Questions About Couples Therapy
When should we consider couples therapy?
We recommend reaching out to a therapist if you and your partner feel stuck in frequent conflicts, sense emotional distance, or don’t know how to move forward together. While these challenges can strain a relationship, couples therapy in Sarnia can provide the tools and guidance to heal and strengthen your partnership. Book a free consultation to begin.
Who can benefit from couples therapy?
Any couple looking to improve their relationship can benefit from therapy. This includes married couples, partners who are dating, long-term cohabiting couples, and co-parents. Couples may seek marriage counselling in Sarnia to improve communication, resolve conflicts, rebuild trust, navigate life changes, or simply deepen their connection.
Therapy isn’t only for relationships in crisis. It’s helpful for anyone who wants to strengthen their partnership.
How long does couples therapy usually last?
The length of couples therapy varies depending on the couple’s goals and challenges. Some couples benefit from just a few sessions to address specific issues, while others work together for several months to explore deeper patterns and strengthen their relationship. Your therapist can help set expectations and tailor the process to your needs.
How much does couples therapy cost?
Couples therapy sessions are $190 per 50-minute session. Many extended health plans cover counselling in Sarnia with a Registered Psychotherapist, though coverage for couples work varies more than it does for individual therapy, so it’s worth checking your benefits before you start.
What happens in a typical couples therapy session?
In a typical session, both partners meet with the therapist to discuss concerns and explore patterns in their relationship. The therapist may:
- Facilitate open and respectful communication
- Identify underlying issues or recurring patterns
- Teach skills for conflict resolution and problem-solving
- Guide exercises to improve emotional connection and understanding
Early in therapy, your therapist may also meet individually with each partner to better understand what brought you to therapy. After that, most sessions include both partners together.
Sessions provide a safe space to share feelings, practise new strategies, and work toward shared goals in the relationship.
How does confidentiality work in couples therapy?
Because the couples therapist works with both partners, some information may be discussed in future sessions to support the relationship. Standard limits of confidentiality still apply, for example, if there is a risk of harm to self or others, or concerns about abuse.
The goal is to create a safe space where both partners feel comfortable sharing, while maintaining safety and trust.
Do both partners need to attend every session?
Ideally, both partners attend together to work on the relationship. Some sessions may include individual time with each partner to explore personal concerns that affect the relationship. Your therapist will guide the best approach to support both of you and the goals you share. If one of you would also like your own support, we offer adult therapy in Sarnia alongside couples work.
Can therapy save a relationship that is struggling?
While therapy can’t guarantee a specific outcome, couples therapy is highly effective at helping partners improve communication, manage conflicts, rebuild trust, and strengthen emotional connection. It provides tools to navigate challenges, understand each other’s perspectives, and develop healthier patterns in the relationship. Even if couples ultimately decide to separate, therapy can help them part on better terms and gain insights that benefit future relationships.
Seeking couples therapy early can increase the chances of positive change and long-term relationship satisfaction.
How soon should we seek couples therapy?
It’s best to seek couples therapy as soon as relationship challenges start affecting communication, trust, or emotional connection. Early support can prevent small issues from becoming more serious, and it helps couples develop healthy patterns before conflicts escalate.
Therapy for couples in Sarnia can support couples through life transitions, major changes, or periods of stress, and it’s effective for relationships at any stage, whether you’re facing a specific problem or simply want to strengthen your connection.
How do we know if couples therapy is working?
Couples therapy is working when you start noticing positive changes in your relationship. This can include feeling heard and understood by your partner, improved communication and fewer misunderstandings, healthier ways to manage conflicts, increased emotional closeness, and practical tools to handle challenges together.
Progress can take time, and every relationship is different. Regularly reflecting on changes, celebrating small wins, and discussing goals with your Sarnia marriage therapist can help you see how therapy is supporting your relationship growth.
